Nisse (village square)

Under the linden trees of Goblin Under the linden trees of Goblin

  • Elf (Borsele)
  • Autumn at its finest
  • Picturesque village square
  • Landscape of coulisses around the village
“You hear children playing by the dyke, birds singing and around you, you see the green of the hedgerow landscape.”

Take a stroll through the hedgerow landscape surrounding Nisse and walk into the village. As soon as you pass under the lime trees, the atmosphere changes. The light becomes softer, the sound more muted. You see the water of the village pond glittering and hear people greeting each other kindly. It's the sort of place where you naturally start walking more slowly.

From the open landscape, you suddenly emerge onto a village square that appears almost picturesque. Your gaze is immediately drawn to the pond, which lies quietly gleaming in the centre of the square. Behind the water stands an elegant eighteenth-century village pump, and a little further on is the bandstand. The Old St. Mary's Church, with its proud towers, still forms the beating heart of the village.

Spring is the most beautiful season to visit Nisse. The lime trees are in full bloom then, and a sweet scent hangs in the air. The greenery around the village is fresh and young, flowers colour the verges, and the square takes on something light and lively. Nisse has its charm in other seasons too, but in spring the village truly comes alive.

To discover Nisse, go for a walk. Park your car in the village and let yourself be guided through the square, past the vaete, the lime trees, and the Saint Mary's Church. From there, you can easily walk into the surrounding landscape. For those who enjoy a long walk, De Poel nature reserve is a little further on. Here, open fields, water, and woodland alternate, giving you a good impression of the characteristic Zeeland landscape. Alternatively, take the Geopark Walk Nisse 1300, where you can discover Nisse in the year 1300 using QR codes.

Take a deep breath of peace. You can hear children playing by the lake, birds singing, and all around you, you see the green of the hedgerow landscape. Ordinary life feels special here, as everything is steeped in history, nature, and village life.
