Where the sea her Secrets surrenders Where the sea her Secrets surrenders
- Wemeldinge (Kapelle)
- Nice for sunny weather
- Discovering marine life
- Educational outing for children
Just past the dyke in Wemeldinge lie the tidal pools. As soon as you descend towards the water, the world changes. You hear the gentle lapping of the tide and see how the water recedes, while the pools fill with a piece of the underwater world. What is normally hidden beneath the surface is suddenly laid bare and visible here. It is a place where the sea momentarily reveals its secrets.
The Oosterschelde is rich in life, and you can see this reflected in the tidal pools. In the clear water, small shrimp, crabs, and little fish move among the stones. With a bit of patience, you can discover starfish, anemones, and strands of seaweed gently swaying with the water. This is a fascinating place, especially for children. With a scoop net and a bucket, the underwater world suddenly becomes tangible, and the pools feel like a mini-ocean full of small surprises.
Summer is an ideal time for a visit. The sun on your face, the fresh air in your nose, and the cool water within easy reach. As you walk past the troughs, you feel the warmth of the stones and hear the gentle rustling of water and wind. Briefly run your hand over the edge, peer into the water, and discover something new each time. A delightful afternoon outing.
You can park by the dike. Then walk up the dike for a sweeping view of the Oosterschelde. Ships sail slowly across the water and the horizon seems endless. Afterwards, you descend towards the tidal basins, where life plays out on a small scale. To the left and right, the water glimmers and you can see how each basin has its own small ecosystem.
The tide pools in Wemeldinge invite you to look, discover and wonder. There's a good chance you'll linger, even when the tide turns back. Because it is precisely in this small world, so close to the dike, that the Oosterschelde reveals itself at its most beautiful.
