As soon as you sail up the Canal through South Beveland, the dynamics of your trip change. The open water gives way to a long, straight course stretching tightly in front of you. Banks guide your course, while fields stretch past you in wide expanses. Village edges loom in the distance: church spires, rooftops and an occasional jetty touching the water. The engine hums evenly and behind you a gentle stern wave traces a trail through the surface.
Along the banks, cyclists move like tiny silhouettes, bridges stand out against the sky and the occasional seagull floats along with you. You pass parts where the green grows close to the water and other parts where the landscape is open and wide. Sometimes you see a jetty with a single boat, other times a passing freighter briefly stirring the water. The wind has free rein over the canal and streaks across the deck.
In summer, sailing through the canal is a relaxing day out. The sun reflects brightly on the water and warms the deck beneath your feet. Other boats cross your path: small sloops, sailboats with bulging canvases and large cargo ships. People wave and greet briefly. The canal is alive, but retains its calm cadence.
The canal forms a link between the Eastern Scheldt and Western Scheldt. You notice the difference when you exchange the wide water for the canal's sleek lines. First there is open visibility, the horizon that seems distant. Then comes the focused trip through the landscape of Zuid-Beveland. That transition makes the crossing special.
As you left the canal or moored your boat at the jetty, you noticed how natural sailing felt here. A clear course and the water moving you forward evenly. You turn off the engine and it gets quiet on deck. For a moment, you still look across the straight stretch of water behind you. It was a beautiful trip.
