After a busy week at work, it’s wonderful to get some sea air. The inlets along the coast of Noord-Beveland are the perfect place for it. As soon as you’re over the dike, you can feel it. The wind rustles through the reeds, the water glints in the morning light, and geese fly overhead. With every step, the scene changes, and no view is the same. You walk through an area that is never dull; the landscape continues to surprise you.
Drive out to one of the inlets on a Sunday morning, early on. As soon as you start walking, your mind switches off. Thoughts recede into the background and your attention naturally turns to the nature around you. You see a patchwork of grasslands, reed beds and shallow pools. Waders forage along the water's edge, ducks bob amongst the reeds and in the distance, you hear the sharp call of a magpie. It's as if time moves just a little slower here.
Spring and autumn are the most beautiful seasons to visit the wetlands. In spring, the air is filled with birdsong and fresh green hues, while in autumn the reeds turn golden and the migratory birds arrive. Early in the morning, when the light is soft and it's almost silent, you can truly find peace here.
Spread across Noord-Beveland are several polders. Think of the Vlietepolder, Oesterput and ’s Gravenhoek. One of the favourites is Keihoogte. Here you’ll find a bird hide, from where you can see the landscape fill itself with life. You can smell the damp grass, feel the salty air and only hear the birds and wind.
Give yourself the peace of the Noord-Bevelandestuaries. Take a detour along the dike, sit down for a while and look. Bring binoculars and go birdwatching. There's a good chance you'll forget the time. The estuaries naturally make you slow down!
