An endless island An endless island
Noord-Beveland is surrounded by the North Sea, the Oosterschelde inlet, and the Veerse Meer lake. Water and land constantly lie alongside each other here, separated by creeks and dikes and connected by polders. The island largely consists of open farmland on heavy marine clay. Sugar beet, grain, and freshly ploughed soil define the landscape, providing it with changing colours throughout the year. Roads and plots run straight across the land, often with a view of a dike or water. These straight lines and vistas are why Noord-Beveland is known as the Endless Island.

The villages are clustered together in the open landscape, often around a harbour or church, with agricultural land and water immediately surrounding them. Old barns, mills, and quays are reminiscent of agriculture and fishing, while marinas and recreational facilities reflect contemporary life. Some villages are more water-oriented, others more land-oriented, but everywhere living, working, and recreation are situated close together.
Always a Different View Always a Different View
Those who travel across Noord-Beveland will notice how the landscape constantly changes. Routes alternate between beyond and within the dikes, from polder to coast and back again. One moment, the peace of fields and sky prevails, the next, the activity on and around the water. This variation dictates the rhythm of the island.
