The landscape The landscape
In Landschapspark Borsele, you will find a unique piece of Zeeland. The landscape dates back to the 12th century. Until then, seawater still had free rein, but in the Middle Ages, people built the first dykes. Small polders were created, some of which have been preserved in certain places. The winding dykes, tidal creeks, numerous orchards, and the fifteen characteristic villages together form an attractive landscape. The busy Westerschelde marks the southern border of the landscape park. The open water and the mudflats and salt marshes that dry out at low tide offer an ever-changing view. The landscape park has known turbulent times. Wars were fought here, lines were defended, and heroes were born. Traces in the landscape, ruins, and restored monuments refer to these intense times. The old agricultural past is also still visible in historic farms and mills.
The landscape is our most important unique asset and is enhanced in many places by special nature reserves. Here you can admire the rich flora and fauna, sometimes from a distance but often also up close, on foot or by bike. Discover all this beauty and set off to explore it for yourself. Walk along quiet lanes, centuries-old dykes and past orchards and springs, whilst soaking up the atmosphere of the fifteen characteristic villages with their churches, windmills and historic buildings. The ‘Sporen in de Zak’ walking network connects over 180 kilometres of routes across paths, dykes and roads. Landscape Park Borsele is also a true paradise for cyclists. You’ll cycle along winding dykes, past small-scale fields and through water-rich nature reserves, on newly constructed cycle paths as well as on unpaved country lanes that lead you to surprising spots.
Villages Villages
Our 15 villages, many of which have distinctive village squares, are situated as hubs within the old polders. In many cases, the original form and historical value of the buildings have been preserved. As a result, the villages have their own character and atmosphere. You’ll find cosy cafés and restaurants in unique locations, charming little squares and plenty of space to enjoy the peace and quiet and the great outdoors. Scattered throughout the area are also various smaller campsites, which provide an excellent base from which to explore Landschapspark Borsele further.
